Yesterday, I was  invited to attend a community outreach meeting   to learn more about  Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa’s’  Summer Night Lights,  Gang Reduction and Youth Development  Program.  It was my first time visiting Los Angeles City Hall and I had no idea it was such a beautiful and historical building.  I was in awe as I traveled through the corridors hardly able to contain my excitement.  I felt like a school girl on my first field trip!!!!   The City Hall is a beautiful building and our meeting was held on the 26th floor in the Mayor Bradley’s Conference Room.  It was a small group of faith-based community partners and we spent time networking and enjoying the continental breakfast.  I shared a table with a lovely woman from Venice California and we were chatting away.  To my amazement, I looked up   to the  front of the room and  Mayor Villaraigosa was standing at the podium.   I did not see him come into the room.  I had seen him many times on television however it was only my second  time seeing him in person.    I tried not to make a spectacle of myself as I snapped a picture of him with my camera phone.

It was obvious that this program was important to him. He talked about the success of the gang reduction program as well as extended an invitation to Faith Based Organizations to partner with LA County to help reduce gang violence.  I was impressed  with the program and look forward to volunteering this summer.   As Executive Director of New Impression,  my function is to attend meeting .  When I received this invitation to the Mayor’s Office of Gang Reduction and Youth Development community outreach meeting, never in my wildest imagination did I expect to see the Mayor. He humbly apologized that he could not stay due to the fact that he was en route to a funeral.   However he took the time to share a little about the program. Mayor Villaraigosa indicated that    The Summer Night Lights program was launched in 2008 in eight recreation and parks facilities to offer fun-filled positive opportunities for young people living in the most crime ridden communities.  In 2009, the program was expanded to include housing developments and a school throughout the City of Los Angeles.   He emphasized that  SNL is a violence reduction strategy which provides an extended programming between the hours of 7pm to midnight, 4 days a week throughout the summer months. I learned that the summer is when gang violence is at the highest resulting in many homicides. Consequently, the purpose of SNL is to create safe environments during the peak times for violence and in communities most affected by violence. This programming is for the entire community which includes those who are potential victims and potential perpetrators of violence.

After the Mayor left, we spent two hours learning more about the program.  For example, that the youth are fed while at the parks and given opportunity for employment as well.   We were a small group however the energy in the room was electrifying.  I met some terrific people.  New Impression will be volunteering to help work with the youth this summer.  I truly needed this motivation as it is hard work, developing a grass-roots organization.  However yesterday’s meeting reminded me that the work we do(community activist) is important.   Many of us live in high crime areas and are aware of the dangers associated with gang violence.  We are all affected by gang violence in one way or another.  If  the violence is not contained, it will and has spilled into other communities as well.  I am excited and committed to doing my share to help promote the Mayor’s Summer Night Lights Program.

When was the last time you reached out to a youth?  Or made a trip to  a Boys or Girls Club? Thought about mentoring a youth? It is time to focus on our future before we end up in a Clock Work Orange Society.  The youth is our future!   If you don’t have the time.  Consider donating to a local homeless shelter program  or inner school program.  Yes, I know first hand, it is better to give than to receive.

This is a funny one.   First all, at age sixty, it would be a medical miracle to find myself pregnant.  If for some reason, I woke up and found out that I was pregnant, I would go into the witness protection program.  There is no way I could face my family and friends. Second it would make the news because it would have to be an immaculate conception as well.  I have not had a sexual partner in over a year….  I have prayed for a way to make it on Dr. Phil  and become an overnight session like the homeless man, Ted Williams.  So to answer this question truthfully, if I were pregnant,  I would not know what to do!!!!! Help!!!!!

Two words, my former supervisor! She made my life hell and treated me like shit! The main reason I won my injury compensation lawsuit. You know how hard it is to win for emotional stress when you are a social worker? Go figure. We settled out of court. A small pittance for what was left after she got finished with me. I was a Supervising Children’s Social worker for a large agency, okay Los Angeles Department of Children Services. The irony, she interviewed me for the job. Her exact words, “I prayed for you”. She claims that she was praying for a supervisor that would be supportive of her. I was very supportive in the beginning. She promoted me after all. I felt a great deal of loyalty. There were warnings along the way. I heard she was a bitch. I was warned not to transfer from Adoptions(at the time a wonderful job) to a Regional office( I had no idea was a hell hole). It was a promotion and I was thinking of my retirement. All good things must come to an end. Our cushy relationship went from “sugar to shit” as my mother used to say. I was her little flunky in the beginning. She gave me the plumb assignments, make me acting in her absence(I had only been a supervisor for less than a month) and made me feel like a superstar! Well, that didn’t last long, she threw me under the bus, I saw the real person and the real me came out! The battle was on and of course I lost! She was so mean that when I transferred to another office, I gave her a going away gift. I returned to clean my desk, the gift was waiting with a note on it “return to sender”. I am not going to relive all the crap she did to me. I will sum it up with four words, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder! Thanks you know who!

IMAGINE BEING POOR, HOMELESS, AND DIABETIC.  AS A EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ON NEW IMPRESSION, THE MAJORITY OF THE HOMELESS INDIVIDUALS WE SERVED HAD DUAL DIAGNOSIS.  THEY ALL SUFFERED FROM DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, SOME HAD CHRONIC ILLNESSES SUCH AS DIABETES AND SEVERE EMOTIONAL DISORDERS AS WELL.  THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY.  THERE ARE AGENCIES THAT ARE DESIGNED TO WORK WITH THIS POPULATION HOWEVER SIMPLY NOT ENOUGH.  IN 2009 WE OPENED OUR FIRST TRANSITIONAL HOUSE, HOWEVER DUE TO LACK OF FUNDS WE WERE FORCED TO CLOSE OUR DOORS.   TODAY WE ARE ADOCATES AND OUR GOAL IS TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC REGARDING THIS SERIOUS SOCIAL ISSUE, BEING HOMELESS AND ILL.  WE ARE A GRASS ROOTS AGENCY HOWEVER WE HAVE THE COMMITTMENT AND THE PASSION TO EFFECT SOCIAL JUSTICE IN THE AREA OF DIABETES AWARENESS.  WHEN I STARTED THIS VENTURE, I HAVE NO IDEA THE MAGNITUDE OF THE PROBLEM. I GREW UP WITH DIABETES AS MY MOTHER WAS DIAGNOSED LATE IN LIFE.   I WATCHED HER STRUGGLED WITH HER WEIGHT MOST OF HER LIFE.  SHE TOOK A CAVALIER APPROACH TO HER ILLNESS, AS SHE USED TO TELL ME “WE ALL HAVE TO DIE WITH SOMETHING”.  SHE JUST DIDNT REALIZE WHAT SHE WAS SAVING, THIS DISEASE  WAS A SLOW DEATH FOR MY MOTHER. THE SADNESS, SHE WAS NEVER TREATED FOR DEPRESSION.  I RETURNED TO SCHOOL AFTER REARING MY CHILDREN TO HELP OTHERS THAT ARE UNDERREPRESENTED.  MY GOAL WAS TO BECOME A MEDICAL SOCIAL WORKER.  IN 1996, I EARNED MY MASTER’S DEGREE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.  I ENDED UP WORKING FOR LOS ANGELES COUNTY AS AN ADOPTIONS SOCIAL WORKER.   I WAS LATER PROMOTED TO A SUPERVISOR AND MY LIFE HAS NEVER BEEN THE SAME.  I LEFT BECAUSE OF A HOSTILE WORK ENVIRONMENT, I DID NOT WANT TO END UP  LIKE MY MOM.  I SUFFERED A TRAUMATIC INJURY ON THE JOB. IT(THE JOB) ALMOST DESTROYED ME HOWEVER THANKS TO GOD, MY THERAPIST, AND SUPPORTIVE FAMILY AND FRIENDS, I AM HEALING.  PLEASE JOIN ME AS WE TRY TO EDUCATE THE COMMUNITY.  IF YOU ARE ABLE TO SEND A DONATION WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF ESTABLISHING PAY PAL.  WE ARE A 501 C 3 AGENCY. ALL DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE.  MOST OF ALL PRAY FOR ME AS I LEAD THIS AGENCY.  THIS IS A DAUNTING TASK, HOWEVER, I THIS IS A LABOR OF LOVE FOR MY MOTHER. MRS. OLA M. JOHNSON. THE BEST MOTHER IN THE WORLD.

All this recent talk regarding bullying has caused me to ponder this question, how do we prevent employees from  being bullied on the job? I have  first hand experience that this big pink elephant in the room is hidden under a tag line called,  working in a hostile work environment. Okay here is the deal. I was bullied by  upper management while working for Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services.  I am retired so I am going to tell it like it is.  Why? Well for numerous reasons number one I dared to speak out against the unfair and unlawful practices many harmful.   Try reading the Los Angeles Times simply goggle Los Angeles County DCFS.   Secondly, they can get any with it, who you gonna call ? O yeah, I tried the Chain of Command, the EEOC, the Union, and it all resulted in retaliation! Okay it is another word for being bullied.  If you tell we are going to give you a bully nose, in my case they bloodied my nose, blackened my eyes, broke both legs and crushed my spirit.  Did i think of committing suicide? Yes!!!! My managers were determined to teach me a lesson. I refused to write up workers that were poorly trained. I was a Supervisor that was given a job with no training and told to perform.   Did I smell a rat? No, I was fresh from graduate school, promoted from being a highly competent Adoptions Worker, I believed in justice for all.  A year later, I was begging for relief.  By this time  survival was the name of the game.  However, I had something called morals and ethics. That is why I was bullied! I complained about everything, poorly trained workers, long hours with no pay, relatives caring from their family without adequate services.  I complained so much that it was time to be punished.  I received my first beating for talking too much by being placed in a position where I would never be promoted. Why? The bullys gave me a low ranking.  Okay, so I transferred to another office, however the bullies where waiting for me.  You know that song, “Who let the Dogs Out”. Welllllll, they were waiting and I got my tail ate up so bad,  They bruised me, broke my ribs, stomped on my ego, wounded my character, and finally they went for the  jugular.  They went after the families that i was trying to help.  One particular case, the bullys knew that I had been working hard to keep the family intact.  So what did they do, looked for every reason to break the family up.  They succeeded, moved the kids from the home. Why? They had the power and they wanted to teach me a lesson.  I learn quickly.  I walked away from my desk after that bloody fight barely alive, the paramedics stated that my heart stopped beating three times(figure of speech yall, I am using a metaphor okay).  In reality, my blood pressure went up and my therapist said, I am taking you out of the war zone.  I now suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  I retired in 2008.   If you think the bullying ended with my retirement. Think again,  The Department(DCFS) sent me a letter in June of this year asking if I would consider coming back to work.  It appears that the workload was such that they needed retirees to come back to help out.  Hell, the year is 2010, my retirement check is not paying the bills so I said of course.  Wellllllll, after waiting a couple of months I decided to call to find out my status only to be told, I was not selected.

This is a serious issue.  We are talking about grown educated professional people that are going to work on a daily basis being bullied as they try to do their job.  This is a vicious group of people.  They are getting away with murder.  Who is minding the store? Who is protecting the families and children of Los Angeles County, while the bullies go after innocent employees.  If I had to do it all over again, I would.   I barely survived and I am permanently disabled.  However the true victims of workplace bullies are the public that they should be protecting.  I now understand why they fear me, they are cowards, insecure, spineless, despicable human beings.  They get their satisfaction from inflciting pain on people that they envy.  Bullys have no self esteem.  Be careful when you encounter an organization ran by bullies.  It is a dangerous and evil place.  If you do business with them, rest assured you will not be treated fairly.  They will look so innocent and appear so kind, however remember this warning, they are wolves in sheep clothing.  They are destroying the moral fiber of the communities that they do business in.  They are destroying lives, they will stop at nothing, they are bullies.   I understand why they wanted to get rid of me. I never feared them. However being the good poker player that I am, I knew when to fold.  I am slowly recovering, this is my first post on the subject. I plan to do my thesis on this subject. Yes, the bullies messed me up so bad, I am now being rehabilitated. I am working on my Masters in Family Therapy.  Bullies in the workplace are also draining our pockets dry.  Think of all the lawsuits being filed and won.  People being retrained(me for example), sick leave, family leave, injury comp, all the man hours being wasted  as people are being paid to investigate these bullies.   So Dr. Phil if you are reading my blog, please invite me to come on your show because it is time to expose the workplace bullies and replace them with their victims!!!! Some are no longer with us, they could not take the pressure, worried themselves to death or abused drugs and alcohol to forget the pain.  Workplace bullies are getting away with murder!!!!!!!!!
